Bye American
Posted by Kip Ward | 11.07.2009 / 7:25 PM PST
As I write this, lightening cracks the air and the thunder sounds like squadrons of jets making low flybys with some of them crashing… The rain is far beyond buckets pushed into frenzy by wicked Sou’wester winds. It’s now winter on the Oregon coast.
We had interesting guests this last week. Dante Chinni and a group […]

A Capital Offence
Posted by Kip Ward | 10.21.2009 / 12:27 PM PDT
There’s not a whole lot to do around here at night, the town is asleep by seven, so I was pleased when my friends Dave and Steph invited me to go see the new Michael Moore film regarding Capitalism.
I’ve been a fan of capitalism since I was old enough to be a fan of […]

Out Cold

I love Lincoln City. For those of you who haven’t ever experienced a small town; you don’t know what you are missing. And you can’t just move here for six months and experience all of the subtleties that marble their way through the community. Like a good steak, small towns are best enjoyed with friends, […]

Greetings Comrades!

A big topic around here is health care, and I can’t think of a bigger mess. My monthly health insurance premium is almost eleven hundred dollars and that is just for my wife and I. You might think that we must be old and sick to have to pay that much but the truth is […]

Giving Credit

Today is September, and with only one more big weekend to go and I can’t wait for it to be over.
That is the odd thing about summer in a tourist economy; it is kind of like the Christmas and Thanksgiving Holidays. You look forward to them both coming and going.
But this year I […]

Sunday Drivers

Boy it is summer all over and we live for perfect weather. A 90-degree day in the valley drives the tourists to the beach and the frigged fog that is formed when the heat from the valley rolls into the cold marine air drives them into the shops and restaurants.
My wife and I live just […]

Killing Time

It’s Father’s Day. My Dad has been gone for over forty years now. I can honestly say that there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of him. And when I think about him, for that moment he is alive, and as I write about him, in a way he draws […]

GMiny Crickets

It is fun to be a part of the Patchwork Nation. Even though we are divided into our own particular communities; we are by no means isolated. Quite the contrary, like everyone else we have near instant access to what ever is happening across the world. It’s a new world where both good and bad […]

Wiggle Room

The new unemployment figures came out today for Lincoln County, Oregon and it is well over 12%. I’m not certain how they figure that. Who they count and whom they don’t.
Normally the majority of the service jobs are filled by Hispanics, but looking around it seems that a lot of them have flown the coop; […]

When Pigs Fly

I graduated from Western Oregon State University. It was a great school and I hear it still is. There are a lot of smart people running the place; after all they all have PhDs.
WOSU is only about an hours drive from Lincoln City, but I haven’t been back there since I left town in […]

Driving My Chevy to the Levy
Posted by Kip Ward | 03.30.2009 / 9:33 PM PDT
I guess times are tough on the coast. There have been three suicides in about as many months, two middle aged women and one elderly man. Even using the skyscraper high Croatian rate of thirty suicides per one hundred thousand we still are about twice what we should be.
I wouldn’t pretend to know what […]

A Leg to Stand On
Posted by Kip Ward | 03.07.2009 / 8:43 PM PST
My hotel is about a block and a half from the beach. The days are unseasonably warm this spring. Is it global climate change? Maybe, but I enjoy an evening beach walk just the same.
On the beach the air is full of the sounds of the pounding ocean and the smell of salty smoke from […]

Riding the Bus
Posted by Kip Ward | 01.21.2009 / 1:59 AM PST
It’s been a long day for a fresh start. Obama’s presidency will stand in stark contrast to the Bush administration.
Bush skirted the American public, did as he chose, and often went it alone. As Commander and Chief it was Bushes’ job to “ drive the bus.” And he did, looking ahead to his vision […]

The Obama Party

It’s Obama’s big day. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for him. It’s got to be a whirlwind for sure. It’s a great day for America and for all of us as well.
We are having a big party in Lincoln City to celebrate. For those of you who don’t follow my blogs, […]

Economics 101

If you want to envision the town in which I live; think of a line running north and south that meanders like a stream, about seven miles long. On the line’s west side put three blocks of weather beaten houses and old hotels. At high tide the Pacific Ocean’s waves can lap at the closest […]
